Support Pillars of Our Marae

Ngā Pou o te Whare

It is important to identify our key focus areas of Taarewaanga Marae.

Our Pou are very clear and will be the main support to achieving our vision. Identifying our Pou provides the following benefits:

  • They help us to breakdown our vision and our mission into smaller, actionable parts
  • They provide decisive criteria that focus on the Marae as a whole – not segmented into certain areas
  • They give a summarized view of the intentions of the Marae

From the discussion of the vision and the challenges/opportunities facing Taarewaanga Marae, key initiatives relating to the advancement of these pou have been identified.  Each of these initiatives has a series of action points necessary to achieve it which are designated appropriate timeframes, measures and a person responsible. This ensures accountability and allows for progress tracking so it is clear when action points and goals have been attained.

POU

MANAAKITANGA

A safe environment for our whānau, manuhiri and our surrounding environs

RANGATIRATANGA

Acknowledgment of current leaders and development of future leaders in all that we do

KOTAHITANGA

Whānau feel connected to the Marae and embrace the identity of Taarewaanga

PIRINGA

A dynamic and sustainable haven for our whānau and all who interact with the Marae

Manaakitanga
A safe environment to care for our whānau, manuhiri and our surrounding environs.

Taarewaanga is a humble marae with a strong sense of manaaki. Manaaki for our own, manaaki for our manuhiri and manaaki for our surrounding environment as Kaitiaki. We want our whānau to feel at home at our Marae and we want our manuhiri to not want to leave. As part of our strategic direction, we have identified areas we would like to maintain as well as areas we would like to introduce:

  • Kaitiakitanga: Ensuring our surrounding environment is well looked after
  • Ritenga: Creation of policies; for example around hireage of the Marae and protocols as tangata whenua
  • Hau Kāinga: Providing and maintaining facilities to ensure a comfortable environment for everyone

Rangatiratanga
Acknowledgement of current leaders and development of future leaders

Taarewaanga Marae has a long history of leadership not only within the Marae but within the wider iwi environment[s]. It has been acknowledged that leadership is potentially ageing with fears of people to “take the mantle”. A number of initiatives have been declared as desirable to develop and maintain levels odf leadership for the Marae.

  • Āheinga: Developing the capacity of all whānau with regard to reo me ōna tikanga
  • Āpōpō: Ensuring a succession plan for key areas of the Marae to ensure it stands sustainability into the future.

Kotahitanga
Whānau feel connected to the Marae and embrace the Taarewaanga identity

Our vision sees all of our whānau embracing and feeling connected to Taarewaanga Marae. This is at the centre of our Marae becoming healthy, secure and sustainable. Opportunities for development in this area are:

  • Whakapapa: People understand their whakapapa: how they connect to the Marae and how they connect to other whānau
  • Maniapototanga: We are proud of our identity as Ngāti Maniapoto and actively contribute to the iwi
  • Hau Kāinga: Providing and maintaining facilities that encourage whānau to come home

Piringa
A haven for our whānau and for all who interact with the Marae

The whānau embrace and feel connected to Taarewaanga Marae, its history of leadership and its strong sense of manaaki. This leads to an environment at the Marae that is dynamic in providing a santuary for a strong, healthy and secure Marae Conmmunity; where our tribal, Māori identity is developed and will be sustainable for future generations of the Marae and into the wider Community.
